The future of learning: why lifelong growth wins

The future of learning is changing. A single degree or the odd training courses is no longer enough for ongoing professional development. The job market is in flux, and artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly prevalent. The skills that are relevant today could be rendered obsolete by AI in the coming years.

Is this a horror scenario?

  • Yes, if I insist on doing the same job for the rest of my life.
  • No, if I am prepared to adapt to the realities of the working world at any time.

 

So, how can we prepare for rapid change and new challenges?

The magic formula for this is lifelong learning. If the predictions about the future of work, staying on top of things will be essential. As I mentioned in my blog post: Change in the world of work, means that some jobs will disappear, but many new ones will be created. Will this be an issue that we will have to deal with for the rest of our lives? Probably, because development never stops. #ANeverEndingStory

Challenges of the present

We live in a world plagued by crises: political instability, conflicts and wars in neighbouring countries, and economic stagnation due to inflation. The list goes on. This is why many argue that there is no money for further education.

This is true if lifelong learning is defined as merely attending a seminar. However, there are many other ways to continue your education. I have already written a blog post on this topic in which I have summarised some learning alternatives that can be introduced in a company without requiring a large investment.

After all, if a company wants to remain competitive, investing in education is curcial for survival in the market.

Establish a culture of learning

Create a corporate culture that promotes learning. Managers should act as role models, by actively supporting learning and setting an example. #BeARoleModel

Individual development plans

Develop bespoke learning plans for each employee based on their individual needs and goals. Prepare employees for changes in the world of work through targeted lectures and workshops.

Use modern technologies

Invest in e-learning platforms, webinars and online courses to enable flexible and location-independent learning. Employees benefit greatly from completing these during working hours and ultimately, the company benefits the most.

Promote peer learning

Encourage employees to learn from each other through mentoring programmes, workshops and regular team meetings.

Incentives and rewards

Set up incentives for continuous learning, such as financial rewards, recognition or career progression. These should be openly communicated within the company to motivate others.

Integrate learning into everyday life

Incorporate short, regular learning activities into the working day to encourage ongoing learning. These could place during team or, management meetings or even individually in the office.

My conclusion

Learning is a great way to educate yourself and strengthen the team. Knowing that there is a future in the company brings personal fulfilment, moving us away from fear towards new opportunities. Since we spend so much time at work, it is comforting to know that we continuously develop and always learn something new. Rather than being afraid of the future, we should use the present moment to effect a change. Then everyone benefits.
